Problem 1036

Solve the absolute value equation.

|-9x| = 27

Solution:-

If a is appositive real number and is u is algebraic expression, than |u| =a is equivalent to u = a or u = -a.

Notice that the equation |-9x| = 27 is the form |u| = a, where u = -9x. There are two possibilities.

-9x = 27 or -9x = -27

Solve the first equation for x.

-9x = 27

Divide both sides by -9.

x = -3

Now solve the second equation for x.

-9x = -27

Divide both sides by -9.

x = 3

finally, write the solutions.

The solutions are -3, 3.
