Problem 936

For the graph, find the average rate of change as a reduced fraction. Also, state the approximate units.(do not abbreviate).

m1

Solution:-

The average rate of change is an application of slope. First, find two known ordered pairs (x,y) given in the problem.

The first ordered pair is (0,1).

The second ordered pair is (2,4).

The average rate of change is:

\frac{the -change- in- the- y-coordinates}{the- change- in- the- x-coordinates}

Use the two known ordered pairs (0,1) and (2,4).

Substitute in the coordinates of the two points.

r = \frac{y_{2}-y_{1}}{x_{2}-x_{1}}=\frac{4-1}{2-0}=\frac{3}{2}

The average rate of change, as a reduced fraction, is \frac{3}{2}.

The y-axis corresponds to pounds, and the x-axis corresponds to bags. Therefore , the unit of measurement that corresponds to the rate is pounds per bag.

Therefore, the average rate of change is \frac{3}{2} pounds per bag.
