Problem 819

Find x in the following equation.

log_{10} (x+12) -log_{10} (x-12) = 1

Solution:-

Apply property log_{b} M = log_{b}N if and only if M = N.

\frac{x+12}{x-12} = 10

Multiply both sides by x-12.

x +12 = 10(x-12)

Simplify to ax = b with a positive

9x = 132

Divide both sides by 9 and simplify

x = \frac{44}{3}
