Problem 398

A null and alternative hypothesis are given. Determine whether the hypothesis test is left-tailed, right-tailed, or two-tailed.

H_{0}: µ ≤ 13

H_{a}:µ > 13

Solution

If the alternative hypothesis contain the not-equal-to inequality symbol, then it is a two-tailed test. If the alternative hypothesis contain the less-than inequality symbol, then it is a left-tailed test. If the alternative hypothesis contain the greater-then inequality symbol, then it is a right-tailed test.

Since the alternative hypothesis H_{a}, has a greater-than inequality symbol, the hypothesis  test is a right-tailed test.
