Problem 362

Problem 362

The Olympic Race. At the  1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea, Florence Griffith-Joyner ran the 100-meter dash in 10.49 seconds (a world record). What was her speed in miles per hour? (1 meter is approximately 39.37 inches.)

Solution

speed is    \frac{100 meter}{10.49 sec }=9.533 meter/sec

1 meter = \frac{1}{1609.344}  miles

So 9.533 m/s      = 9.533*(\frac{1}{1609.344})*3600 miles/hour

= \frac{34318.8}{1609.344}

=21.32 miles/hour
