For the following equations write a word problem draw a picture , and find the solution to the equation:

a. \frac{5}{12} - \frac{1}{3} =  ?

b. \frac{1}{2} - \frac{2}{3} =  ?

a.

\frac{5}{12}  – \frac{ 1}{3} =?

Sarah wants to buy a gold chain measuring \frac{1}{3} ft from a jeweler that has a chain with a length of 5 inches. How many inches will the jeweler have left after selling Sarah the length she desires?

 

The solution to the equation is \frac{5}{12}  – \frac{ 1}{3} = \fac{1}{12}. So, the jeweler will have 1 in left.

b.

½ – \frac{2}{3} =?

½ – \frac{2}{3} = – \frac{1}{6}

He still has to paint 1/6 of the room.
