Give an equation of a line perpendicular to the line y = 4x having the same y – intercept.

Solution

4x-y=0

Y intercept of given equation is

Put x=0 in the given equation

y=4(0)

y=0

So y intercept(0,0)

Perpendicular line to the given line is

-x-4y=c…….(2)

This line pass through (0,0)

-(0)-4(0)=c

c=0

Put this value in equation 2

-x-4y=0

4y=-x

y=- $\frac{x}{4}$

So equation of line perpendicular to

the line y=4x is
y=- $\frac{x}{4}$
