Problem 116

Problem 116

Consider the experiment of selecting a card from an ordinary deck of 52 playing cards and determine the probability of the stated event.

A card that is not a king and not a spade is drawn.

Solution

Total number of kings are = 4

Spade card are = 13

Total card including spade and kings = (13 + 4) – 1 = 16

Total favorable cases are = 52 – 16 = 36

Total possible cases are = 52

P(not king and not spade) = \frac{36}{52} = \frac{9}{13}
