Addition and Subtraction

Any two real numbers can be added. For example, the sum of 7 and \sqrt{7} can

be expressed as 7 + \sqrt{3}. We cannot simplify this sum. However, when we

have like radicals (radicals having the same index and radicand), we can use

the distributive laws to simplify by collecting like radical terms. For example,

7\sqrt{3} + \sqrt{3} = 7\sqrt{3} + 1. \sqrt{3} = (7 + 1)\sqrt{3} = 8\sqrt{3}.

More Multiplication

To multiply expressions in which some factors contain more than one term,

we use the procedures for multiplying polynomials.
