Find the median distance traveled.

Find the median of the following set of numbers.

 

33, 72, 23, 27, 77, 68, 85

 

Solution:-

 

First arrange the values in ascending order which is given bellow

23 , 27, 33, 68, 72, 77, 85

When the number of values of odd then medain =\frac{(n+1)}{2}  th term

Where n=number of terms

So here medain=\frac{(7+1)}{2}=\frac{8}{2}=4 th term

4 th term is 68

Problem 608

Find the median of the following set of numbers.

 

52, 25, 55, 51, 67, 59

 

Solution:-

 

First arrange the values in ascending order which is given bellow

25, 51, 52, 55 , 59, 67

When the number of values of even then medain =avarge of \frac{n}{2}  th term  and (\frac{n}{2})+1 th term

Where n=number of terms

So here medain= \frac{[\frac{6}{2}+(\frac{6}{2}+1)]}{2}=\frac{(3 rd term+4 th term)}{2}

3 rd term is 52

4 th term is 55

Median=\frac{(52+55)}{2} =53\tfrac{1}{2}

Problem 607

 

Fiona kept the following records of her phone bills for 12 months:

$55, $50, $64, $54, $71, $57, $55, $48, $66, $71, $59, $70

 

Find the mean and median of Fiona’s monthly phone bills.

 

Solution:-

 

First arrange the values in ascending order which is given bellow

$48, $50, $54, $55,$55,$57,$59,$64,$66,$70,$71,$71

Mean=sum of terms /number of terms

Sum of terms=48+50+54+55+55+57+59+64+66+70+71+17=720

Number of terms=12

So mean=720/12=$60

When the number of values of even then medain =avarge of n/2  th term  and (n/2)+1 th term

Where n=number of terms

So here medain=[12/2  + (12/2)+1]/2=(6 th term+7 th term)/2

 

6 th term is $57

 

7 th term is $59

 

So median=(57+59)/2=$58

Problem 603

Find the median of the following set of numbers.

4, 5, 6, 9, 11

 

Solution:-

 

First arrange the values in ascending order which is given bellow

4, 5, 6, 9, 11

When tha number of values of odd then medain =\frac{(n+1)}{2}  th term

Medain=\frac{(5+1)}{2}=\frac{6}{2}=3 th term

3 th term is 6

Find the median of the following set of numbers.

4, 5, 6, 9, 11

First arrange the values in ascending order which is given bellow solution:-

4, 5, 6, 9, 11

When tha number of values of odd then medain = \frac{n + 1}{2}  th term

Medain=\frac{(5 +1)}{2}=\frac{6}{3}=3 th term

3 th term is 6

The median is  average value of two middle terms
